HEPATITIS A - This virus infects the liver. It is caught by eating food or drinking water with the virus in it. The vaccine is fantastic, as a course (usually two injections) will probably give lifelong immunity.
HEPATITIS B - This virus also infects the liver. It is caught through contact with body fluids from another person. The vaccine gives long lasting immunity. It is wise protection
TYPHOID - Typhoid also comes from contaminated food and water. It can cause severe diarrhoea and the infection can spread to the blood stream and cause blood poisoning. The injectable vaccine lasts three years and gives moderate cover. However, food and water precautions are still very important as the vaccine effect is not 100% protective.
CHOLERA - Cholera is uncommon and the vaccine is not wonderfully effective. However, it can reduce your change of gastroenteritis caused by other bugs and some people take it for this reason. It is not commonly given for regular travellers. However, it some situations it is very important.
JAPANESE ENCEPHALITIS - Japanese encephalitis is a virus that infects the brain. It is given to longer term travellers in at risk countries. The risk of this disease depends on your length of stay, visits to rural areas and exposure to mosquito bites. Avoiding bites from mosquitos is critical to preventing many diseases.
MENINGOCOCCAL MENINGITIS - Predominantly needed for some African Countries. The vaccine for travel is different to the normal meningococcal vaccine given to children in Australia.
RABIES - Comes from bites or scratches from infected mammals in most overseas destinations. It is an expensive vaccine but should be given to people who appear to be at moderately high risk of infection, such as people going to work as Vets or people going to remote locations where they cannot easily get medical attention
ROUTINE VACCINATIONS - We will check that you routine vaccinations are up to date - Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, and childhood vaccinations done.
