Take Insect Repellent with you - to avoid Dengue, Malaria, Japanese encephalitis and other infections.
We spend a lot of time working, so when we go away we want to have the best time we can and stay healthy. These travel tips will help you have a great holiday and stay well.
***Plan your trip well ahead of time. Investigate what permits or visas and entry requirements are for countries you wish to visit. Read about other's experiences.
***Identify any health issues you have and possibly visit your doctor. List your previous vaccinations if possible.
***Visit our Travel Clinic 6 - 8 weeks before your trip for advice, vaccinations, kits - first aid and diarrhoea, insect repellents etc.
***Take out travel health insurance - medical evacuation is expensive. Note what is not covered eg. Riding motorbikes.
***Avoid mosquito bites - DEET containing repellents, long sleeves, screened rooms, spray room at night, nets if not able to exclude mosquitos.
***Eat food and drink wisely. Be aware that water and ice might be contaminated. Bottled water is safer. Very hot food cooked in front of you is safest as long as it is very hot. Evidence shows that most people go away and break the rule "boil it, cook it, peel it or forget it". Have a diarrhoea treatment plan.
***Stay safe - safe alcohol use, safe vehicle use, safe sex, safe activities - but have fun.
***Avoid animals like monkeys and dogs - a cute little dog might bite or scratch you - as other animals might - and if you develop rabies … you die. So if you are bitten, seek urgent medical attention.
***Be aware of how to get good medical attention while away. If you are ill or have a high fever, get attention early. No malaria tablet is 100% effective in preventing malaria. Illness can progress rapidly.
Malaria can develop many months after travel. Be aware and get tested if you fall ill - tell the doctor you have been to an area where there is malaria.
