Some travellers are at higher risk and these travellers should seek very early advice.

CHRONIC ILLNESS - Those who have chronic illness are at a higher risk of illness during travel for various reasons. Illnesses such as Diabetes, HIV & autoimmune conditions may be at higher risk of picking up infections due to a weaker immune system. A number of medications may increase your risk of infection, such as acid reducing medicines that people take for heartburn. People chronic conditions should see their local doctor for a ‘tune up’ before they book their trip.

PREGNANCY - There are many safe destinations to travel while pregnant and generally air travel is safe up to 34 to 36 weeks if your pregnancy is low risk. However, it is wise to check with your airline and your doctor before planning travel. Travelling to countries where there are increased risks of infectious disease and lower standards of health care are not generally recommended. Some vaccinations are not recommended in pregnancy, medications are more difficult to manage, such as anti-malarial tablets, and illnesses can have more serious consequences for a pregnant mother and her unborn child.

CHILDREN - One of the joys of travel is to introduce children to different cultures so we encourage travel. Children have an increased risk of infections and and are more likely than adults to suffer dog bites, with the increased risk of malaria. Careful planning and preparation is important as is vaccination. Adults and children should keep away from animals particularly in countries where there is rabies. Seek urgent medical attention for bites or scratches from animals.

YOUNG PEOPLE - It is wonderful for young people to travel overseas but they should be aware of the risks. Young people tend to travel more economically and are more likely to eat and drink contaminated foods and water. They might drink more alcohol and are more likely to have accidents on roads. Sexual relationships in developing countries with locals are more risky due to a high incidence of sexually transmitted infections in some regions.

OTHER - Long term travellers, remote travellers, those visiting friends and relatives in developing countries, adventure travellers and high altitude travellers should all seek advice regarding their travel plans and risk minimisation.
